summer to fall skincare
Pumpkin spice latte’s and fall scented candles, to puffy jackets and snow boots, fall is coming around the corner. I love fall so much, my birthday is in the fall and I love going shopping for fall weather clothing, and getting a warm drink from Starbucks.
Moving from summer to fall is definitely interesting in Minnesota, some days it will be cold, and the next, it is warm all day. My skin is definitely feeling a little confused as well.
Here are some tips as we head into the colder weather, and warmer coffee orders of the year:
Cleansing with a richer cleanser:
Hopefully you are already cleansing your skin with a non-striping cleanser, but making sure that as this winter sets in, that your normal summer cleanser does not dry out your skin as it is adjusting. One of my favorite fluffy, hydrating cleansers is the Round Lab Dokdo Cleanser. This cleanser feels like a cloud on your skin, and removes dirt, and excess makeup left from the first cleanse.
Making sure out skin does not get dried out by our cleanser is the first step to having a glowy complexion all winter long.
Exfoliating regularly:
Exfoliating regularly is good for our skin, but in winter, we can be more prone to flaky, dry, and cracked skin. Exfoliating routinely is good to help with our skin looking its best.
There are two different ways to exfoliate- I have a whole blog post dedicated to exfoliation if you wanted to learn more! - physical and chemical exfoliation.
Physical exfoliation is through a scrub or a patterned cotton pad. These are great for flaky (visible/physical) skin concerns. While chemical exfoliation is usually in the form of a liquid toner or a serum. Now there are many products that can have a chemical exfoliant. Examples would be AHA BHA and Salicylic acid and those are just a few.
Making sure you are exfoliating reguraly through out every season is great to help reveal beautiful and healthy skin.
Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize:
I feel this would be an obvious one, doing everything before would have no point if you do not hydrate and moisturize your skin!
In the morning, instead of using a gel cream, I replace it with a (still) lightweight cream to sink in well, but not too thick for the day. While in the night, I make sure to use a rich cream containing ceramides and moisturizing ingredients like hyaluronic acid. One of my favorite creams is the Naturium Plant Ceramide Rich Moisture Cream. I love how this cream sinks into the skin, and not leaving it thick and like its going to end up on my pillow instead.
Brighten up for the cold:
I think winter is the best time to try vitamin C and other great forms to help brighten the skin. Often during the winter and colder weathers, our skin can feel and look dull, from lack of sun (not terrible exposure) and not being outside as often.
I love using vitamin C serums and other products to brighten up my skin. Two serums that I have been loving; Beauty of Joseon’s Glow serum (which actually contains propolis and Niacinamide. Hanskin Glow Serum as well had plant derived ingredients to glow from within. A moisturizer that has vitamin C is the Neogen Vito Duo Day Cream (formulated with Joan Kim!) This cream is hydrating and I love the scent, and how it smooths the look of the skin while being calming on the skin.
