Need a break? Try Mugwort!
Have you ever felt that your skin will suddenly get red or hot out of nowhere, with no warning? Or right after an important meeting or dinner party you look in the mirror at the end of the night and see that your skin was peeling and red the entire time?
I have felt that way before, so many times. Especially as the fall weather is setting in, my skin is not used to the colder wind, and more layers are needed to keep warm. Let me tell you- Minnesota is cold!
Last year, like I have mentioned in a few of these blogs, I was on acne medication, while also using a topical retinoid, and my skin was dehydrated and flakey to say the least. I was only on the medication for about 3-4 months, but I chose a bad time to go on it, because I started the end of November, and my skin was not only dry from the medication, but from the weather as well. Looking back I probably would have chosen a different season to start that lol.
Nevertheless, I have been on a journey with my skin, and I have gotten to a point (almost a year yay!) that my skin is so much clearer and there is a significant decrease in pain, and redness.
But while I was on medication, I found that my skin did not like the weather, and was easily irritated by makeup, fragrance, and many other factors. So in this post, I wanted to share with you one of my favorite ingredients when it comes to irritated and red skin- Mugwort!
What is Mugwort?
Known as mugwort or artemisia vulgaris, having antibacterial properties, it can be extremely calming to those with sensitive skin, and acne-prone skin. A plant that has been used in northern Europe and Asia for its healing and soothing properties.
Most well known in K-beauty skincare products, for its anti-inflammatory properties, and can aid dry, irritated skin. Many brands have come up with entire lines of mugwort filled cleansers, toners, and creams. All to help calm the skin and rebalance the moisture barrier.
What type of products contain Mugwort?
I’m From Mugwort Essence:
Such an amazing essence! Has a higher viscosity, and instantly calms and hydrates the skin. It is a huge bottle and I have been using it constantly and it has lasted me almost a year! It also is in a glass bottle which is great when finishing the product because you can recycle, or reuse it!
I’m From Mugwort Mask:
Another from I’m From, this mask is life-changing, whenever I feel that my skin is a little irritated, maybe from the harsh weather, or some acne. I love applying this to the skin, even when it’s just sitting in my skincare cabinet, when I apply it, it feels like it was in the fridge, so amazing! I can instantly see a difference in the temperature of my skin after. (they also have a sheet mask form of this which I love as well.)
Round Lab Mugwort Calming Toner:
This toner was the first product I ever tried with mugwort as the main ingredient, and I fell in love with this product, so soothing, and hydrating, and it was lightweight so I could apply layers if I wanted extra hydration. The bottle is a good size, so it lasts really long!
APRILSKIN Artemisia Rice Toner:
This vicious toner is amazing especially for the winter months as it sinks into the pores easily and leaves your skin feeling smooth and calmed. I actually started using this, and then I had my dad try it in his routine, cause he had dry skin. He loves it so much he asked me to get him it again for Christmas! (I love that my dad now enjoys taking care of his skin too)
I’m From Mugwort Spot Gel:
If you are looking for a spot gel to calm down pimples, this spot treatment is great to calm the skin. Having a gel consistency, it stays where you place it, and doesn't leave and oily residue. Super great for those red and inflamed spots that haven't gotten to the surface of the skin yet, but still hurt.
When it comes to calming down the skin after a breakout, or environmental factors, I recommend trying to hydrate and soothe the skin. As well as take care of your body, eating hearty foods, drinking enough water, having a warm cup of tea, and getting enough rest is always a great way to give your skin (and the rest of your body) a jump start to the day to help feel and look better!
