Makeup tips for every occasion

Whether staying in for the night, or going out for a drink, or going out with your friends to see a movie. Sometimes I will come back from a day out with friends, and look in the mirror, and see makeup separating, patchy, and my skin looking flaky, and eyeshadow looking faded.

When it comes to making your makeup last all night, or looking fresh for your instagram feed, here are some tips and tricks to long lasting, and camera ready makeup.

Prepping the skin before

Making sure the skin is moisturized and prepped is important for makeup sit on the skin, without exaggerating fine lines or texture. Also, moisturized skin, is comfortable skin. Keeping the skin moisturized can prevent the makeup from breaking apart faster than you would want it to.

Using a primer is a great step to help your makeup last longer, and aide in any skin concerns you have. There are so many options to chose from when picking a primer. Hydrating, pore filling, color correcting, mattifying, and many others.

Getting ready in good lighting (and knowing the light you will be under that night)

When getting ready, the type of light you are getting ready in can effect how your makeup may turn out when you walk into a different room.

Warm, cool, stage lighting and all different kinds of lighting can effect how makeup can look. Knowing where you will be can help you know if maybe you should apply less powder next, or if you are washed out in certain lighting.

I like to take a picture of myself with the flash on before I leave, this helps me know what I might look like in real life when my friends and I take pictures.

Knowing your foundation

Choosing the right base for whatever you may be doing is important to making sure the formula works with your skin, and finish for event.

Deciding what finish, coverage, and other products that you will be using on top is good to have an idea before starting so that you can finish with exactly what you want, and not regret using something that made sense in the moment, but don’t work together in the long run.

A setting powder is always necessary

Looking like you just finished a marathon is not the ideal look for photos. A setting powder can help you avoid those blinding photos later.

Setting powders can be translucent, or can add another layer of coverage over foundation. They can range from difference finishes, satin to matte look.

A rule I like to follow when picking my finish, is when I am focusing more on my eyes for the makeup look, I tend to use a more magnifying/smoothing powder. While when my eye look may be nothing or very subtle, I tend to leave my skin very glowy/satin. This helps balance the face, where not the entire face is fighting for attention.

Setting spray to lock everything in

Ending with a setting spray is great to help lock everything in. Make sure not to spray too much, as sometimes that can cause all your good hard work go (literally) streaming down your face.

An even spray across your face to help set in your makeup is great to end. I like to take my sponge after spraying, and pat in the rest into my skin. Really getting it into my makeup and finish.
