Why do we skincare?

I think I have received a few people ask me “why do you even do skincare? I mean doesn’t our skin regulate itself?” Which is a great question!

I think often social media has expanded the realm of skincare and self-care and made this intimidation or fear for those who may not have an interest or may not want to learn more about skincare. Which is completely fine, not everyone may like a certain thing in life.

The question really boils down to what someone’s interest is in their life are. For example, I got into skincare because I struggled with acne, and wanted to get rid of it. Later on, I learned to love my skin for what it is, and now enjoy taking care of my skin. For someone who does not have that, or maybe never had anyone in their life to show them that, it may seem unnecessary.

Perception:

I think often, even I get swept into this more often than not, is the perception we want others to see of us. Just how social media really only shows the good things in our lives, and hides the bad, we want to show our best face to the world. Many people turn to skincare or makeup to do that.

Health:

I would say all dermatologists and esthetician’s would say that taking care of your skin is a way of keeping up your health as well. Skincare like applying sunscreen daily or when you are out in the sun can help prevent the cause of cancer. It also keeps us looking youthful and for some of us (me!) we won’t get sunburnt if we take care of your skin.

Maintenance:

Some people use skincare to keep themselves looking youthful and just good skin. I have seen so many videos on being a high maintenance, low maintenance girl. And I would agree that I am that girl. Doing your skincare and different treatments, like facials, derma-planing, or injections-whatever have you- can be a great confidence booster and overall help to your skin.

The fun of it all:

Some people, just like me, got into skincare to help with an insecurity we had with our skin. I had very severe acne, and it hurt and I was always embarrassed by skin. I learned more about skincare and while learning, I started to love doing my skincare and trying new products and techniques out. Everyone has a reason they got into skincare, so their older siblings showed them how to do it, and now its muscle memory for them, or some watched their mom or dad doing their skincare and were interested. Some had to learn for work or school. Some just love skincare!

I hope that whether you are a new to the skincare world, or have a cabinet full of half used skincare that is just collecting dust because you love trying new things. I hope you can do your skincare routine just for the fun of it!
