SKIN QUESTION: texture

Bumps, acne, fine lines and wrinkles are some of the many skin issues that a lot of us, including myself could permanently get rid of.

Sadly our skin goes through many changes from the moment we are born, to when we celebrate birthday with too many candles on it, it could cause a house fire. Growing up with acne-prone skin I have always thought texture was something I would always have to deal with. That everyone but me had great skin, and that I needed to hide the problems that I saw and wanted to get rid of.

What exactly defines texture?

Skin texture refers to the skin surface condition. Whether it be smooth, or bumpy, or soft, or seems to have an uneven texture throughout the skin.

Having texture does not mean that your skin is bad, or you are not beautiful. Right now, I have a lot of texture on nose and chin, and I came up with this blog post because of my own skin condition.

What best improves texture?

Regular exfoliation:

Exfoliating regularly can help remove those stubborn dead skin cells from the skin faster, and I have found that when I have a lot of texture, I usually discover that I have forgotten to exfoliate that week. Depending on what texture you are dealing with, depends on the type of exfoliant.

When dealing with whiteheads, blackheads, or minimal texture (including fine lines) I would recommend using an AHA exfoliant, as the molecule is larger and stays on the surface of the skin.

When dealing with acne, like pustules or larger (obviously consult a dermatologist if you are on medication for your skin) I would recommend a BHA exfoliant as the molecule is smaller and can go into the pores and clean them out of skin cells and bacteria.

Another option for those who want to target acne, or wrinkles would be to start small with a retinol. This can help to increase the production of collagen in the skin. In high amounts, it can leave the skin dry, but with proper hydration, retinol can show amazing results! I highly recommend!

If you have really sensitive skin, but still want to exfoliate, I recommend a PHA as this exfoliants molecule is the largest and is gentle on the skin.

Exfoliating two to three times a week can greatly improve texture.

Intense facials or procedures:

There are a lot of ways that people go about improving their skin texture, some go to dermatologists or estheticians to get more intense facials or procedures. Laser resurfacing, microdermabrasion, microneedling, and hydrofacials are to name a few. These higher intensity procedures remove layers of the skin and exfoliate to help reveal brighter and smoother skin. I would refrain from trying these facials before a dermatologist or AP esthetician says it is the best option for you. As these would be more suited for those who have deeper texture issues as well as they may have already done other ways to improve their texture.

Hydration:

If you don’t drink enough water, your body can often show the effects very quickly, and the same is for our skin. When we leave it dehydrated (especially after exfoliating) it can actually make our skin shed more dead skin cells and make our skin look dull, and uneven. Using a hydrating moisturizer day and night, and making sure to wear sunscreen can help as well.
